EmberHound vs Spirion: where each one fits

Published 28 September 20263 min readBy EmberHound

Both find sensitive data. They are built for different buyers, and the honest comparison is about who is going to operate the tool rather than which one is better.

We are one of the two products in this comparison, so read it with that in mind. What follows is sourced to Spirion's own material and a public pricing listing, and the aim is to describe where each product fits rather than to argue that one wins.

What Spirion is

Spirion describes its work as safeguarding sensitive information from discovery and classification through to remediation, organised around four functions it names as discover, classify, remediate and protect.

The product line is broad. Its own site names a Sensitive Data Platform delivered as SaaS, a Sensitive Data Manager for on-premises deployment, Sensitive Data Finder for subject rights request work, and Sensitive Data Watcher for monitoring. It names classification technologies of its own, including AnyFind for match accuracy and a machine learning approach it calls CADIA.

The sectors it lists are eCommerce, finance, healthcare, higher education, manufacturing and telecommunications, and the customers it names publicly include large universities and government departments. Capterra lists its pricing as quote-based rather than published, so the buying process starts with a sales conversation.

What EmberHound is

EmberHound is a data discovery platform for lean IT teams. It scans enrolled company devices for personal and cardholder data and reports what it finds by category and location.

Scanning runs on the endpoint. Each match produces a masked preview and a salted SHA-256 fingerprint, and raw file content is never uploaded. Mailbox scanning, OCR and external drive scanning are add-ons rather than part of the base product. Real-time blocking is not something the platform does today.

The question that actually separates them

It is not capability. It is who operates the tool.

A product with an on-premises deployment option, several modules, and a quote-based sales motion is built on the assumption that somebody will own it. In a university or a government department that assumption holds, and the breadth is the point: one platform covering discovery, classification, remediation and monitoring across a large estate is worth the setup.

In a company where the person responsible for data protection also runs IT support and renews the domains, that assumption does not hold. The question there is narrower and more urgent: is there card data or personal data sitting on our laptops, and can I show someone the answer.

When Spirion is the better call

If you have a large, mixed estate, a regulatory profile that demands classification and remediation workflow as well as discovery, and somebody whose job includes running the platform, the breadth Spirion offers is doing real work. A narrower tool would leave you buying the rest separately.

The same is true if you need on-premises deployment. That is a requirement some organisations genuinely have, and it is not one every product answers.

When EmberHound is the better call

If the question is whether sensitive data is on your company devices, if you want an answer this week rather than after an implementation, and if nobody's job title includes running a discovery platform, the narrower product is the one that gets used.

You can test that without a sales conversation. The free plan covers one device and the checkout collects no card details.

Every claim about Spirion above is drawn from its own published material or the Capterra pricing listing, both linked in the sources. Product lines and pricing change, so check the current position before making a decision on it.
